The Economist Cloud Computing Special

By Markus Klems

The Economist issued a series of articles about Cloud Computing within the context of corporate IT. Some interesting points:

  • Cloud Computing lowers market barriers, thus enforcing competition and specialisation. The next wave of business process outsourcing is yet to come (making standards like Web Services more important)
  • Bank 2.0? “SWIFT, the organisation that manages international bank transfers, is planning to build a data centre in neutral Switzerland. That will allow it to keep data about European transfers on the old continent, where it cannot be subpoenaed by the American government.” (Link)
  • Cloud Computing economics: hardware is going to be a winner (with declining margins over time), business application vendors will lose, unless they manage to change their business model (Link)
  • Netbooks, smartphones and other electronic devices with built-in Internet access are going to be even more successful, allowing users to tap into the cloud wherever they are
